The City of Annapolis’ REACH program is asking neighbors near and far to help students with their school supply needs for the fall semester. REACH is an after-school program that offers programming to Annapolis youth, many of whom come from families with limited resources,
“It’s been really hard out here all summer with the unemployment rates,” said Ron-Shaye Clark, the program’s director. “Anything we can do at the Pip Moyer Center we are going to try.”
The Pip Moyer Recreation Center is a city recreation center now open to the public at 50 percent capacity due to the coronavirus. Previously it shut its doors due to the epidemic.
REACH is hoping to give out over 100 backpacks full of supplies to students in need at its “REACH for Peace Day” for youth and families September 12.
In addition to donated backpacks (new or very gently used), the program is hoping the public would donate the following items for the event:
food and drinks (pre-packaged snacks, water)
paper/plastic supplies (plates, cups, napkins, utensils)
hand sanitizer, disposable masks, headphones/ear buds, memory sticks
glue, construction paper, markers, crayons, tape, scissors
pens, pencils, highlighters, binders, notebook paper
REACH for Peace Day will include educational resource tables, performances, vendors, food and fun. The event is in partnership with the Annapolis Police Department, and REACH is looking for involvement from area organizations.
Social Distancing and health protocols are in effect for the event, which is set for Saturday, September 12 from 2 to 8 pm at 935 Spa Road, Annapolis, MD 21401.
Clark said she is enthusiastic about getting the new school year off to a good start for the kids, and hopes the public will contribute to the effort.
Those willing can drop donations off at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center (273 Hilltop Ln, Annapolis, MD 21403) at the front entrance daily 8 am to 8 pm
“I’s excited for the new school year,” Clark said. “REACH is up and running for them(students) this year. Space is limited.”
